Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
Prof. Mohamed Al-Shabrawey, MBBCh, M.Sc., Ph.D. is a biomedical scientist and professor specializing in vision sciences, retinal disease and vascular biology. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, where he is also the V. Everett Kinsey Endowed Professor. He serves as the Founding Director of the OUWB Eye Research Center and Director of the Oakland University Eye Research Institute.
He earned his medical degree from Mansoura University, Egypt, in 1988, followed by an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences from the same institution. He subsequently undertook research training at the Medical College of Georgia, developing a research program focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying retinal vascular injury.
His research focuses particularly on the mechanisms of diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity and age-related macular degeneration, including retinal vascular dysfunction, blood-retinal barrier breakdown and pathological neovascularization. His work has received funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and other agencies, and he has published extensively in vision science and ophthalmology.
