Current Positions

  • Professor of Surgery — Al Faisal University, Riyadh
  • Consultant Breast Surgeon — King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC), Riyadh
  • Board Member — Saudi Society of Breast and Endocrine Surgery (SSBES)
  • Specialty: Breast Surgery / Surgical Oncology
  • Main clinical focus: Breast cancer and breast surgical diseases

His association with KFSH&RC extends back many years. A KFSH&RC research report identified him as Section Head of Breast & Endocrine Surgery within the Department of Surgery.

Clinical Expertise

Prof. Al Malik's clinical and academic work focuses primarily on:

  • Breast cancer surgery
  • Breast surgical oncology
  • Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
  • Sentinel lymph-node biopsy
  • Axillary surgery
  • Breast-conserving surgery
  • Mastectomy
  • Phyllodes tumors
  • Locally advanced breast cancer
  • Stage IV breast cancer
  • Neoadjuvant breast cancer treatment and surgery
  • Multidisciplinary breast cancer management

His research and clinical work demonstrate particular expertise in determining the appropriate extent of breast and axillary surgery and evaluating approaches that may reduce unnecessary surgical intervention.

Academic & Research Contributions

Prof. Al Malik has been involved in numerous breast cancer research projects at KFSH&RC. One important area of his work has been DCIS and sentinel lymph-node biopsy. He supervised research examining the role of sentinel lymph-node biopsy in clinically detected DCIS, contributing to the evaluation of appropriate surgical staging strategies.

He has also participated in research examining surgery for Stage IV breast cancer, including the role of local treatment in patients presenting with metastatic disease. KFSH&RC research records list him as a co-investigator on this work.

Another significant area of research is breast angiosarcoma. He contributed to a 16-year single-institution study examining the clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes of breast angiosarcoma treated at KFSH&RC.

He has also been involved in research on phyllodes tumors of the breast, examining their clinical characteristics, surgical management, recurrence, and metastatic behavior. A Saudi institutional series involving 45 patients evaluated different surgical approaches and outcomes.

Research Interests

His documented research interests include:

  • Breast cancer surgery
  • DCIS management
  • Sentinel lymph-node biopsy
  • Axillary surgery
  • Phyllodes breast tumors
  • Breast angiosarcoma
  • Stage IV breast cancer
  • Locally advanced breast cancer
  • Neoadjuvant chemotherapy and timing of surgery
  • Breast cancer genetics and BRCA-related disease
  • Multidisciplinary breast cancer management

KFSH&RC's research records also list him as an investigator on projects concerning early breast cancer and intra-operative radiotherapy and a 10-year institutional experience of axillary surgery.

Publications & Academic Work

Prof. Al Malik has an established publication record in breast surgery and oncology. His research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals and covers subjects including:

  • Sentinel lymph-node biopsy in clinically detected DCIS
  • Breast angiosarcoma and its clinical outcomes
  • Phyllodes breast tumors and surgical management
  • Surgery following neoadjuvant treatment for breast cancer
  • Pregnancy-associated breast cancer
  • Breast cancer molecular/genetic research

Research profiles currently attribute approximately 29 publications to Osama Al-Malik, although publication-profile counts can change over time and may include records requiring author disambiguation.

Leadership & Professional Contributions

Prof. Al Malik is a member of the leadership of the Saudi Society of Breast and Endocrine Surgery. The society currently lists him as a Board Member, alongside other senior Saudi breast and endocrine surgeons.

His long-term involvement in breast and endocrine surgery at KFSH&RC has also included research leadership and supervision. In the DCIS sentinel-node research, for example, he was identified as the physician who designed the research and supervised the report.

2026 SSBES Annual Conference

Prof. Al Malik is a featured faculty member at the 2026 SSBES Annual Conference, taking place 10–12 December 2026. The official scientific program lists him as the keynote speaker for the session:

“Update Guide to DCIS Management”

This topic is particularly consistent with his longstanding research and clinical involvement in ductal carcinoma in situ, sentinel lymph-node biopsy, breast-conserving treatment, and the appropriate extent of surgical management.
