Dr. Joseph Alsousou is a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon with more than two decades of clinical and academic experience. He currently serves as Chair of the Orthopaedics Division and Consultant in Orthopaedic Surgery (Hip, Knee and Pelvis) and Trauma Surgery at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), Abu Dhabi. His specialist interests include pelvic and acetabular trauma, complex hip arthroplasty, periprosthetic surgery, hip and knee replacement, and complex orthopaedic reconstruction.
Dr. Alsousou studied medicine at St George's Hospital Medical School, University of London, before undertaking higher surgical training in Oxford and Liverpool. He obtained a PhD/DPhil in Orthopaedic Surgery from the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford. He subsequently completed fellowships in complex arthroplasty in Oxford and pelvis and acetabular trauma surgery in Cambridge, giving him specialized training in two particularly demanding areas of orthopaedic surgery.
Prior to his current UAE position, Dr. Alsousou worked in the United Kingdom as a consultant at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he was involved in pelvic and acetabular surgery, complex arthroplasty, clinical research, and postgraduate education. He also served as an Honorary Senior Lecturer/Clinical Lecturer and was involved in the Manchester Acetabulum and Pelvic Surgery (MAPS) service. The University of Manchester's North West Surgical Trials Centre lists his research interests as trauma clinical trials, platelet-rich plasma, and osteoarthritis, and identifies him as a supervisor for postgraduate research.
His research career includes participation in major multicentre clinical trials, most notably the PATH-2 trial, a randomized controlled trial investigating platelet-rich plasma for acute Achilles tendon rupture. He has also served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on studies involving orthopaedic trauma and surgical treatment. His academic work has received recognition from organizations including EFORT, BOA, BOFAS, BASEM, ARUK, and the Emirates Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Alsousou is also active in surgical education. He has served as a course director for Manchester Trauma courses and continues to contribute to international orthopaedic education. In the UAE, he has participated as faculty in the EHS International Orthopedic Congress series. For the 4th EHS International Orthopedic Congress (FIOC), he is listed as a UAE speaker.
