Prof. Guido Pieles is a Consultant Adult and Paediatric Sports and Congenital Cardiologist and Head of Sports Cardiology and Screening at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha, Qatar. He also holds an Honorary Professorship in Sports Cardiology at University College London.
He obtained his medical degree from the University of Marburg, followed by a PhD in Philosophy of Medicine and a DPhil in Cardiology at the University of Oxford. He completed specialist training in paediatric and adult congenital, inherited and sports cardiology at the Bristol Heart Institute and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
His clinical and research interests include sports cardiology, paediatric athlete screening, congenital heart disease, inherited cardiac conditions and cardiovascular performance in athletes. He has been involved in international consensus and guideline work, including FIFA's youth football cardiac-screening initiative, where Aspetar identified him as a co-chair and member of the four-person steering committee.
His recent academic work continues to focus on cardiovascular screening and risk assessment in athletes. A 2026 European Heart Journal article discusses his contribution to consensus recommendations for cardiac evaluation of paediatric athletes.
