Professor Dr. Nandu KS Thalange, MBBS, BSc, FRCP, FRCPCH, FHEA is a British-trained Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist and diabetes specialist with more than 35 years of clinical and research experience across the UK and UAE. His principal areas of expertise include paediatric diabetes, growth and puberty, obesity, endocrine genetics, skeletal dysplasia and diabetes technology. He is currently based in the UAE and is listed as a Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at Genesis Healthcare, Dubai, and Clinical Professor of Paediatrics at Mohammed Bin Rashid University (MBRU).
He has previously held a senior consultant position at Al Jalila Children's Speciality Hospital in Dubai, where he was associated with the Department of Medical Subspecialties/Paediatric Endocrinology.
Dr. Thalange graduated from King's College London in 1988, beginning his career with the intention of specializing in paediatric endocrinology.
His professional qualifications include:
After graduating from King's College London, Dr. Thalange undertook junior medical posts in and around London. He subsequently moved to Manchester for a research position, where he studied patterns of normal and abnormal childhood growth.
He then moved to East Anglia as a Senior Registrar and incorporated a fellowship in public health into his specialist training. This provided him with experience in:
After completing his paediatric training in Cambridge, he returned to Norfolk, where he became involved in children's services before taking up a paediatric endocrinology position in Surrey. In 2002, he returned to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, where he developed his clinical and academic career in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes.
Dr. Thalange's clinical practice covers a broad spectrum of paediatric endocrine disorders, including:
His clinical and research career has placed particular emphasis on improving care for children and young people with diabetes.
Dr. Thalange has maintained a substantial research career alongside his clinical practice. His research has focused particularly on paediatric diabetes and endocrine disorders, clinical trials, growth and diabetes technology.
During his UK career, he became involved in clinical governance and healthcare-quality work, including serving as a clinical governance and complaints reviewer for the Commission for Health Improvement and subsequently the Healthcare Commission.
His research has also involved large international clinical trials evaluating new insulin therapies for children with type 1 diabetes.
One of Dr. Thalange's most important professional contributions has been his involvement in multinational clinical trials of long-acting insulin therapies for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
He was a key investigator in trials evaluating insulin degludec, including a multinational study involving children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The trial found that insulin degludec provided comparable long-term glycaemic control and was associated with lower rates of hyperglycaemia with ketosis compared with insulin detemir.
A recent 2026 professional profile states that Dr. Thalange was chief investigator for two major multinational clinical trials that contributed to worldwide paediatric approval of two long-acting insulins. These trials helped advance basal insulin options for children and young people living with type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Thalange has longstanding expertise in the use and evaluation of diabetes technology.
His work encompasses:
In a recent 2026 discussion, he highlighted the evolution of CGM, insulin pumps, newer insulin therapies and emerging approaches such as stem-cell research, while emphasizing that technology works best when children and families receive appropriate education and support.
His recent research continues to cover paediatric endocrinology and metabolic disease.
In 2026, Dr. Thalange co-authored “Metabolic Phenotyping for Early Diabetes Prevention: A Web-Based Clinical Tool.” The work explores the use of metabolic information to identify people at increased risk of diabetes and describes a web-based clinical risk-calculation approach.
He also co-authored a 2025 case report describing a homozygous leptin-receptor mutation associated with severe obesity, hypopituitarism and type 2 diabetes in a young patient. The case highlights the importance of considering monogenic causes in children presenting with severe early-onset obesity and endocrine abnormalities.
His research activities have also included work on pituitary imaging in children, with a 2025/2026 publication from a UAE tertiary paediatric centre listing him as a co-author.
Dr. Thalange has been heavily involved in medical education throughout his career.
His FHEA qualification reflects his formal involvement in higher-education teaching, while his current Clinical Professor role at MBRU allows him to contribute to the education and development of medical students and healthcare professionals.
He has also contributed to specialist educational publications and professional advisory meetings in paediatric endocrinology. His expertise has been used in discussions concerning growth hormone therapy, diabetes technology and new endocrine treatments.
Dr. Thalange has contributed to the medical literature as an author and clinical-trial investigator.
His publications include research in Pediatric Diabetes examining insulin degludec in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
He was also a contributor/editor of the textbook Pediatric Orthopedics for Primary Healthcare: Evidence-Based Practice, published by Springer in 2021.
His career combines clinical medicine with research, healthcare management and education. Notable aspects include:
