Dr. Mohammed Almehthel, MBBS, CCD, ABIM, FRCPC is a Saudi Consultant Endocrinologist, diabetes specialist, academic, and researcher with expertise in diabetes technology, type 1 diabetes, beta-cell/islet-cell replacement therapy, obesity, and adrenal disorders. He is based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and maintains an academic affiliation with the Division of Endocrinology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada.
Dr. Almehthel completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah in 2000. He subsequently completed postgraduate training in internal medicine at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre and at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

Before returning to Saudi Arabia, Dr. Almehthel held academic and clinical positions in Vancouver, including work at Vancouver General Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital. He also served as an Endocrinology Postgraduate Program Director at UBC from 2014–2019.
He joined King Fahad Medical City in 2019. He subsequently became Diabetes Fellowship Program Director (2020–2022), Diabetes Department Chairperson (2021–2022), and later Medical Director of the Obesity, Endocrinology and Metabolism Center.
He has also served on committees involving the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, Saudi Food and Drug Authority, Saudi Health Council, and KFMC's Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
Dr. Almehthel's research focuses particularly on diabetes technology, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin delivery, type 1 diabetes, beta-cell replacement therapy, obesity, and adrenal disease. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed research papers, abstracts, book chapters, and clinical consensus statements.
A major recent contribution was his leadership as corresponding author of the 2026 Saudi Arabian consensus on the use of continuous glucose monitoring in non-intensively managed type 2 diabetes. The consensus was published in Frontiers in Endocrinology and involved experts from multiple Saudi institutions.
He also contributed to a 2025 expert opinion statement on continuous glucose monitoring in type 2 diabetes across the Arab Gulf region.
In 2026, he presented research at the American Diabetes Association 86th Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, including work involving diabetes treatment and technology.
Dr. Almehthel is an active speaker and faculty member at regional and international diabetes and endocrinology meetings. For example, he was listed among the international faculty of ATTD-ASIA 2024, a major conference focused on advanced technologies and treatments in diabetes.
He also served as Scientific Committee Chairman for the Saudi Advanced Diabetes Technology conference.
