Dr. Celeste Geertsema is a New Zealand sports physician, born in South Africa, currently working as a Sports Medicine Physician at Aspetar. She holds a fellowship with the Australasian College of Sports and Exercise Medicine and has particular interests in football medicine, event medical coverage, and snow and adventure sports.
She has an exceptionally strong background in international sports medicine. She was the first female Team Physician at a FIFA World Cup, serving with the New Zealand national team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. In 2018, she became the first female FIFA Venue Medical Officer at a men's FIFA World Cup, when she served at the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
She has also worked with the International Olympic Committee, overseeing medical services at the 2018 Winter Olympics, and has provided or overseen medical services at numerous international competitions, including FIFA World Cups, IAAF World Championships, Handball World Championships, FINA World Cups, Diamond League events, and WTA and ATP tournaments.
She was the New Zealand national men's football team physician for seven years and has also worked as Medical Director for New Zealand Canoe Racing, a ski-patrol doctor, New Zealand Army Medical Officer, and expedition doctor for Mount Everest and Mount Aconcagua expeditions.
She is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.
