About

Dr. Ammira Al-Shabeeb Akil, PhD, EMBA, is a researcher and scientific leader at Sidra Medicine in Doha, Qatar. Her current Sidra profile identifies her as Principal Investigator, Associate Level, and Director of the Metabolic and Mendelian Disorders Translational Research Program, within Precision Genomics and Translational Omics. She also heads the Precision Genomics and Translational Omics Lab.

She completed her PhD in molecular genetics at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, and also holds an Executive MBA from HEC Paris. Her postdoctoral training included work in pediatric infectious diseases, cancer drug targeting, and genetics of type 1 diabetes.

Since joining Sidra Medicine in 2015, she has played a major role in several national genomics and precision-medicine initiatives in Qatar. Her work includes NOOR-QATAR, Qatar's national newborn genome screening initiative, as well as the DANNA type 1 diabetes cohort and the Qatar Mendelian Disorders Cohort.

Her research focuses on genomics, precision medicine, metabolic and Mendelian disorders, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and translational medicine. Her laboratory works on clinical-grade genomic pipelines and integration of genomic data with electronic medical records to support clinical implementation.
