Basic Trauma Management

Basic Trauma Management is a practical medical training course designed to develop the knowledge and skills required to assess, stabilize, and manage patients with traumatic injuries during the critical early stages of care. Organized by IBC Medical Services, the course provides healthcare professionals with a systematic approach to trauma evaluation and management, combining theoretical instruction with practical application. The course begins with trauma evaluation and initial assessment, focusing on the systematic identification of life-threatening injuries. Participants learn the primary and secondary survey approaches, head-to-toe examination, patient history gathering, triage principles, and appropriate prioritization of care according to injury severity. Airway and breathing management form a major component of the programme. Participants learn basic airway maneuvers while maintaining cervical spine protection, as well as the use of advanced airway adjuncts and appropriate approaches to serious thoracic injuries such as tension pneumothorax, massive hemothorax, and flail chest. The course also addresses hemorrhage control and shock management, including recognition of hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic shock, methods for controlling external bleeding, intravenous access, fluid replacement, and blood-resuscitation strategies. These skills are particularly important in preventing deterioration during the initial management of severely injured patients. Participants also examine the assessment and management of specific traumatic injuries, including head and spinal trauma, abdominal and pelvic injuries, and musculoskeletal injuries. The programme covers neurological assessment, prevention of secondary brain injury, spinal motion restriction, pelvic stabilization, splinting, fracture management, and compartment syndrome. Through case-based discussions, clinical scenarios, and practical guidance, the course emphasizes the application of evidence-based trauma protocols in high-pressure emergency situations. The training is particularly relevant to professionals working in emergency medicine, trauma care, surgery, critical care, and prehospital care. The course is designed for emergency physicians, trauma surgeons, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, nurses, general surgeons, critical care physicians, and other medical professionals involved in the initial assessment and management of trauma patients. Upon completion, participants are eligible for 7 CME credits, with the official IBC course information identifying CME hours from the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).
