AO Trauma Masters Course - Surgical Approaches: Upper Limb with Human Anatomical Specimens

An advanced master-level course by AO Trauma focusing on complex surgical approaches to the upper limb using hands-on human anatomical specimens. Objectives • Discuss, apply and integrate principles of assessment and surgical management of upper extremity fractures. • Know the detailed anatomy of common operative approaches with location and arrangement of the important related soft tissue structures • Recognize key associated soft tissue and ligamentous injuries , prioritize their management and understand how these injuries impact treatment planning for complex upper extremity trauma. • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of various surgical approaches and fixation techniques based on the specific needs of each surgery • List common complications associated with complex upper extremity injuries. Discuss strategies for both prevention and management. • Perform the common approaches used in upper limb trauma management with other less common ones used in special situations. • Incorporate postoperative care and rehabilitation protocols , specifically tailored to the conditions discussed, ensuring a comprehensive approach to better recovery Description AO masters courses address the latest techniques and best practices in operative fracture management. This course provides a comprehensive coverage of upper limb surgical approaches: shoulder, humerus, elbow, forearm, and wrist. 3 days course with interactive lectures and small group case discussions to deepen understanding of complex fracture management. A whole day hands-on cadaveric dissection in a wet lab setting for realistic surgical practice. The event consists of faculty-led sessions emphasizing anatomical landmarks, safe dissection, and implant positioning.

The AO Trauma Masters Course on Surgical Approaches to the Upper Limb is an advanced, hands-on educational event designed for experienced orthopedic and trauma surgeons. Utilizing human anatomical specimens, this intensive course provides participants with the opportunity to practice and perfect complex surgical exposures of the shoulder, humerus, elbow, forearm, and wrist. Expert faculty will guide attendees through detailed anatomical dissections, discussing indications, potential pitfalls, and strategies for avoiding neurovascular complications during upper extremity trauma surgery.

What you'll learn

Demonstrate advanced surgical approaches to the shoulder, humerus, elbow, forearm, and wrist.
Identify critical neurovascular structures during upper limb exposures to minimize iatrogenic injury.
Apply appropriate surgical techniques for complex intra-articular and periarticular fractures of the upper extremity.
Evaluate the indications and contraindications for various surgical approaches in upper limb trauma.
Perform hands-on anatomical dissections on human specimens to enhance spatial awareness and surgical precision.
